A nod to the spirits of the past

I am in a Burgerville with Elaine and we are grabbing a quick bite between errands. It’s the location close to my old high school and as a nod to an old tradition and the ghosts I used to share it with I request the two songs out of the jukebox.. The first of these is Land Down Under by The Men At Work then the second comes on.
Elaine: “who is this?”
Jeff: “It’s Toto. The song is Africa.”
Elaine: “I like it.”

Guy sitting with some co-workers several tables away bursts into song: “I guess the rains down in affffrriicca…” Then he says to his co-workers “Good old Toto, they never let you down.”

And then I smile to myself.

Elaine, you didn't know Toto? Sadness.
'Down Under' and 'Africa' are some strange theme songs but still good.

Nope, I was fairly musically illiterate when I met jeff.
I grew up listening to Linda Ronstadt, Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine, Barry Manilow, Neil Diamond and Enya. Plus a lot of classical. Weird, huh?
I didn't really listen to the radio much and my first big forray into music was with my cousin in 11th grade. He introduced me to trance and some popular music like Collective soul, third-eye blind, prodigy and some others. But largely, Jeff has been my educator.
My only personal enlightenment in this area was my discovery of vocal jazz, which I'm still addicted to. Otherwise, it goes like this:

E: "Who's this on the radio?"
J: "Wait, right now? That's Boston!"
E: "Oh"
J: ..sigh..

It even happens with cds we OWN! I can't seem to keep music straight in my brain.
Oh well.

I did like Toto though... good stuff.

Get this! My friend Jen's Uncle is IN THE MUSIC VIDEO for that Toto song! Random, huh?! I think he was in the actor or something.

Whoops I started to say I think he was in the band, then I switched to I think he was an actor, and it turned into "I think he was in the actor." And that sounds just plain wrong.

Yeah, Elaine, you need to ask Eric about the nearly identical conversations we have. He plays the same songs, and yet, I still can't remember who they are. "Who is this, Pink Floyd?" "Um, no, it's the Eagles." "Oops."

mistaking the Eagles for Pink Floyd...for shame
